I ran across an interesting article written by a writer for Slate.com who spent three nights in the Newark Bears (Can-Am League) bullpen this year. Having been a bullpen catcher in the independent leagues over the 3 decades (1997-1998 Northeast League, 2005 Central League, 2007-2008 Continental League, briefly in 2012 Pecos League) there are some truths revealed about how the guys in the bullpen act and think. While it doesn't completely encapsulate what goes on in the 'pen, it at least gives a more honest look than most other writers have given over the years:
